A lot of people don't realize that the person receiving a psychic or mediumship reading can have an affect on how it goes. That's not to say it's your fault if things go wrong! There's lots of things that can affect the energy of a reading. But, being mindful of the energy you're bringing into your session and the things you do and say during can certainly make a difference. So, here's a few tips to help you get the most out of your reading.
Be skeptical, not cynical: There's a big difference between being skeptical and being cynical. A skeptic questions information being presented to them with an open mind. They may have certain beliefs going into a situation, but they evaluate the evidence and are open to changing their beliefs when presented with evidence that goes against it. It's great to be skeptical! To be honest, I wouldn't believe most of the stuff I do if I hadn't experienced it myself. I, myself, am a pretty skeptical person. A cynic, however, is closed minded. They go into a situation with a certain belief and will defend that belief to the death, no matter the evidence presented against it. Even if they were given the best, most evidential reading in the world, they would then argue that the reader had done a cold reading or somehow looked up information ahead of time. Someone with a cynical attitude won't have much to gain from a reading, so they probably shouldn't waste their time.
Don't come under the influence of drugs or alcohol: During a reading, the reader will either be reading your energy or using your energy to help link with your loved ones in spirit. If your energy is not clear because of drug or alcohol use, then the reading may not be the clearest either. Most prescription drugs are okay because doctors usually prescribe them at a dose that allows you to function normally in your day-to-day activities. Note: Never stop taking your prescribed medication without your doctor's approval and always follow your doctors advice. Your health is most important!
Don't feed the reader!: When I give readings, I work best when I know absolutely nothing about the client. As information comes to me, I ask the client to verify if it's correct or not as that helps me to know if I'm reading the energy correctly. If the client starts giving me extra details though, and I'm not careful, that can trigger my brain to fill in extra stuff based on the information that was told to me. If it's coming from my brain and not my intuition, then it'll be wrong. It also takes away the chance for me to bring that information through as evidence later on in the reading. Therefore, the less I know, the better. A simple yes, no, maybe, or I'm not sure works just fine. I always leave time at the end for questions and/or feedback, most other readers will too.
Save questions until the end (mediumship readings): If you have questions for your loved one in spirit, try asking them to bring it up and answer it during the reading before you even get there or pick up the phone to start. For example, if you had to make a difficult decision before their passing and you'd like to know if you made the right choice, you could ask them (whether out loud or in your mind) to answer that for you when you go to your reading. More times than not that information will come through and will almost be a sort of "bonus" evidence, proving your loved ones are still around hearing what say to them or ask them. There are some times though, for whatever reason, that the answer might not come through during the reading. The signs and symbols being received by the medium may have been misinterpreted, the energy of the reading may be off, or the loved one in spirit may just not want to talk about it (we can't control what they say or don't say in a reading any more than we can control what you say or don't say during a reading). If that happens, you should have time at the end to address it and see if you can get your answers. If you're getting an intuitive or psychic reading however, you don't have to wait until the very end to ask your questions. Usually the whole point of a psychic reading is to have questions answered, so sometimes it's best for the sake of time to just ask them.
Find a quiet time/place and gather your gear (for video/phone readings): If your reading will be through video or over the phone, make sure to find a quiet place where you will be free from distractions and interruptions. Make sure you have a good signal or internet connection and all the things you'll need. If the reader will allow it (I do), a recording of the session can really come in handy to look back on later. A notepad and pen for notes can help too. Don't forget your list of questions if you have any! It's also a good idea to have some water handy and to use the restroom before you start.
Most readers I know would be okay with their clients reaching out to ask them questions they may have about their upcoming reading. Some may be pretty busy, but should have an assistant or someone available to answer questions if they're not able to themselves. Some may even have answers to frequently asked questions on their website or in their blogs. I hope you've found a useful tip or two in here.
