Psychic ability is synonymous with intuitive ability and it's something that both humans and animals naturally have. Animals rely heavily on their intuition for survival. It helps them to know where their prey is, or when to run and hide so they themselves don't become prey. Luckily, us humans don't have to rely on our intuition and instincts for survival on a day-to-day basis like that anymore. But intuitive ability is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. Without the need for it, we as a species have began to lose it.
I think one of the biggest problems is that most people just don't recognize their intuition and how it's speaking to them. One of the hardest things about recognizing your intuition is that it's different for everyone. Intuition can speak to us through a gut feeling, a flash of an image in your mind's eye, that small still voice in the back of your mind, or even just a knowing that you can't explain. Some people refer to it as a "sixth sense" which isn't too far off the mark. It's not just a sixth sense though, it's like six more senses in addition to our regular five. They are commonly referred to as "the clairs" which comes from the French word meaning "clear".
Clairvoyance
Most people have heard of this intuitive sense. It's definitely the most popular of the bunch. Clairvoyance means "clear seeing". This sense of seeing is through our "mind's eye" rather than our physical eyes though. It's the same type of sight you would use if I were to ask you to picture an apple or a basketball. Most people have one intuitive sense that's stronger than the others. People who have a strong sense of clairvoyance may be more visual learners, have active and vivid dream lives, or find it easy to visualize people, places, and things with great detail.
Clairaudience
Clairaudience means "clear hearing". This is that still, small voice in the back of your mind. The voice usually sounds like your own. Just like the one you're hearing as you read the words on this page. It will usually come in as words or short phrases but can also speak to us through songs or sayings. People with a strong sense of clairaudience usually learn better by listening, may talk to themselves a lot, and may often hear their name being called when nobody's around.
Clairsentience
Clairsentience means "clear feeling". This is what people are referring to when they say they have a "gut feeling" about something or something just doesn't "feel" right. People with a strong sense of clairsentience can usually "feel" the energy in a room or about a person. They're usually a little more emotionally sensitive than others and can sometimes even feel the emotions or physical pain of others.
Claircognizance
Claircognizance means "clear knowing". This is when you just know something but don't know how you know it. It can also come as an idea that pops into your head seemingly out of nowhere. People with a strong sense of claircognizance are usually analytical thinkers who have an uncanny ability to "just know" things. They usually have great ideas that come to them seemingly out of nowhere.
Clairalience and Clairgustance
Clairalience means "clear smelling" and clairgustance means "clear tasting". They're the senses you would use if I asked you to imagine the smell of your favorite perfume or the taste of a nice warm chocolate chip cookie. These two aren't as commonly used as the previous ones. Mainly because there's only so much information that can be conveyed through a taste or a smell. I consider them to be more like "helper" abilities that kick in when appropriate.
Think of these intuitive senses like instruments in a band. The air that passes through the instrument is like the energy picked up by your intuitive senses and each instrument (or intuitive sense) picks up and expresses this energy in a different way. Together, the instruments can play a beautiful song just as our intuitive senses can come together to portray an important message or story.
The Right State of Mind
Knowing how our intuition speaks to us is half the battle, the other half is allowing our intuition to speak to us. In order to receive intuitive information, you have to be in the right state of mind or brainwave while focusing your attention on whatever you're trying to receive information about. There are five types of brainwaves: Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta.
Gamma (Frequency 32 Hz to 100 Hz) - These are the fastest of the known brainwaves and are associated with a state of heightened awareness or peak mental state when the brain is processing information from different areas all at once.
Beta (Frequency 13 Hz to 30 Hz) - This is the state we're in as we go about our day getting our to-do lists done and thinking about what we're going to make for supper later. We're in this active thinking state most of our waking day.
Alpha (Frequency 8 Hz to 13 Hz) - This is that light meditative state we go into when the mind is relaxed. It's the state you're in when you "zone out" while driving to work and don't remember how you got there.
Theta (Frequency 4 Hz to 8 Hz) - This is a deep meditative state or light sleep mode commonly associated with dreaming.
Delta (Frequency 0.5 Hz to 4 Hz) - This is the slowest of all the brainwaves and is associated with a state of deep, restorative sleep.
There haven't been many, but the studies that have been done have shown that we need to be in that Alpha state to hear our intuition. Sometimes Theta, but usually Alpha. Which means we need to be in a relaxed, light meditative state. The thing is, we're usually so caught up with the demands of our busy lives that we don't get many opportunities to sit back and relax in that Alpha state like they did hundreds of years ago. Then when we do have a moment or two to relax, we usually reach for our phones or the remote to find some other distraction for our minds to get caught up in. Our brains are constantly in that busy Beta state which is why it's important to carve some time out of our schedules to meditate and learn to just be, especially if you're looking to build on your intuitive abilities. And why not? Intuition isn't just for psychics to give readings. Artists use it for inspiration, doctors and nurses use it to save lives, teachers use it to find the best way to reach their students, cops use it to help catch the bad guys, and so and and so forth. Not to mention all the ways it can help just in our regular day-to-day lives. Although I haven't found a way to win the lottery with it yet. If anyone figures that out, please let me know :)
